We recently had the pleasure of attending a talk with Katherine Miller and Chef Renée Erickson to discuss Miller’s new book, At the Table: The Chef’s Guide to Advocacy. After being given the task of galvanizing chefs to become changemakers at the James Beard Foundation’s Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change (recently hosted in Washington at Carnation Farms), she learned that folks in the restaurant industry are powerhouses for change, especially in our often fraught food system. She spoke about how everyone, not just chefs, can find their voice and advocate for their communities, and her book provides tools to get started. At the Table: The Chef’s Guide to Advocacy is available online via islandpress.org, or at Book Larder in Fremont
TO LEARN
The Works in Fremont is home to all kinds of creative classes for adults, and we are here for it! Classes range from mellow—like watercolors, food and wine pairing basics and bath bomb workshops, to intense—like wax carving for jewelry making and geometric pie art. For November and December, they’re also hosting holiday card workshops, and classes on making holiday wreaths and embroidered ornaments. There’s something for everyone, and any of their classes would make a great holiday gift, hint hint. Visit theworksseattle.com to see their schedule and register.
